Dadeville, the seat of Tallapoosa County, began as an Indian trading post and a center of commerce in cotton, lumber, tin, asbestos and livestock. John H. Broadnax surveyed the town in 1836, it received a charter in 1837, and it has been the county seat since 1838. It was named for Major Francis Langhorne Dade, killed by Seminoles in 1835 in what became known as the Dade Massacre, though Dade never visited Tallapoosa County. As a stagecoach stop on the Tennessee Road between Montgomery and Georgia, the town drew a stream of traders whose goods and livestock often crowded the courthouse square.
Dadeville was home to the Graefenberg Medical Institute, Alabama's first medical school, founded by Dr. Philip M. Shepard. It operated from 1852 until the Civil War and trained physicians who served the state and the Confederacy, but efforts to revive it after the war and Shepard's death failed. The town lost its charter during the war and was incorporated a second time in 1878, after first incorporating in 1858. Nearby on the Tallapoosa River is Horseshoe Bend, where Andrew Jackson defeated the Red Stick Creeks in 1814.
