Discover Camp Hill

Camp Hill, in Tallapoosa County, was incorporated in 1895. Its First Universalist Church, founded in 1846 as Liberty Universalist Church, met first under a brush arbor and then in a cabin, a frame church built in 1884 and a brick sanctuary completed in 1907; in the first half of the 20th century it was the largest Universalist church in the southeastern United States.

More about Camp Hill

In 1898 Dr. Lyman Ward, a Universalist minister from New York, founded the Southern Industrial Institute here to educate poor Alabama children whose opportunities had been limited by the Civil War and Reconstruction. With donations from Camp Hill residents and help from reformers including Booker T. Washington, the school prepared young men and women for "the work of life," and it is now Lyman Ward Military Academy. On July 15, 1931, a white mob led by the county sheriff and the Camp Hill police chief raided a meeting of the Alabama Sharecroppers' Union, a Communist-organized union of Black farmers, in a Camp Hill church. Union member Ralph Gray was killed and his home burned, many others were killed, injured or arrested, and those arrested were eventually released without trial.
