Butler, the seat of Choctaw County, was laid out as a county seat. Barrytown, established in 1842, served as the first seat of the area, and Choctaw County itself was created in 1847. In 1848 the legislature authorized moving the seat closer to the center of the county, and the new town was settled that year and named for Pierce Mason Butler, a former governor of South Carolina who was killed in the Mexican–American War.
The county's first courthouse was a simple log building; it was later sold, lived in, taken apart and rebuilt, and it now stands at the Choctaw County Historical Museum in Gilbertown. A second courthouse, built in 1848, burned in 1870 and was replaced that same year, and the present courthouse was built in 1906 and 1907. A 1939 memorial on the grounds honors the Ruffin Dragoons, a Confederate cavalry company. For many years Butler grew only modestly, mostly as the seat of county government, and it missed out on the lumber boom of the 1920s. Its population rose substantially in the 1950s, when the American Can Company built a paper, pulp and converting mill on the Tombigbee River about 17 miles away and built housing for its workers in Butler.
