People entered the Puget Sound region about 12,000 years ago, and the earliest evidence of life on the Port Gardner Peninsula dates back about 2,000 years. The Snohomish, with many villages along the Snohomish River and Possession Sound, had their principal settlement at Hibulb, at Preston Point below the bluff at the river's mouth. It was their most important village, with the largest potlatch house in their territory, four cedar longhouses about 100 feet long and a strong cedar palisade, and the Snohomish consider it their place of origin. Their population, estimated at more than 6,000, was devastated by smallpox and measles in the early 19th century, and in the 1820s a huge landslide at Camano Head sent a wave that washed away part of Hibulb. The name hibulb means "water bubbling out of the ground."

More about Everett

On August 22, 1890, the Rucker brothers, who had come north from Tacoma with modest plans, filed a plat for a 50-acre townsite on the peninsula. That summer the lumberman Henry Hewitt Jr. and the railroad executive Charles L. Colby, who had worked together in Wisconsin and Tacoma, drew up plans for an industrial city on Port Gardner Bay that would be a "Pittsburgh of the West" on James J. Hill's planned Great Northern Railway. By September Colby had raised $800,000 from the oil magnate John D. Rockefeller and his associate Colgate Hoyt to start buying land quietly.
