Before American settlement the Snohomish used the area of today's Lynnwood in summer for hunting, fishing, berry gathering and root cultivation. After the Treaty of Point Elliott of 1855 they were moved to the Tulalip reservation near Marysville, opening the land to settlers. American loggers surveyed Brown's Bay and present Meadowdale in 1859, and logging began in 1860. Duncan Hunter, a Scottish-born stonemason who had come from Wisconsin, became the first white resident in 1889 with an 80-acre claim on today's 36th Avenue West, which his son Basil kept until his death in 1982 and which later became Pioneer Park. William Morrice, a fellow stonemason from Aberdeen, claimed land to the east, and settlers from Pennsylvania homesteaded in Cedar Valley and near Scriber Lake in 1888, leading to the area's first schoolhouse in 1895.
More about Lynnwood
In the early 20th century private companies gradually logged the area, leaving stump-covered land. The Seattle-Everett Interurban Railway arrived in 1910, bringing reliable transportation and real estate speculators. In 1917 the Puget Mill Company, then the largest landowner in southern Snohomish County, created the planned community of Alderwood Manor near an Interurban station, with streets named for trees and 5- to 10-acre plots sold for $200 an acre to city dwellers wanting small farms, and a 30-acre demonstration farm taught newcomers to raise crops and chickens.
