Discover Bellevue

The Duwamish, whose main villages were in present Renton and Seattle, kept a small outpost called Satskal on Mercer Slough, south of today's downtown Bellevue, from which an attack on the settlers of Elliott Bay was launched, and they also had a village near Factoria. European Americans first settled Bellevue in 1869, when William Meydenbauer and Aaron Mercer claimed homesteads several miles apart. Both left within a few years, and permanent residents did not arrive until 1879. By 1882 a community of logging homesteaders had formed. Once the land was logged it was cleared, largely by Japanese immigrant workers in the early 20th century, for small farms on leased land.

More about Bellevue

In the early 20th century Bellevue was a weekend getaway for Seattle residents, who came by ferry to Meydenbauer Bay and spent the day at Wildwood Park. When the ferry landing moved to Medina, tourism fell off, and in 1925 the Bellevue Strawberry Festival was started to bring visitors back. By the 1930s it drew as many as 15,000 people to a town of about 2,000. In the 1920s the developer James S. Ditty predicted a city of 200,000, with a bridge across Lake Washington, golf courses and airports, and published a map of his vision in 1928. The Lake Washington Floating Bridge, opened in 1940, made Bellevue a bedroom community for Seattle. In 1942 the Strawberry Festival was canceled, mainly because about 90 percent of the area's farm workers were of Japanese ancestry and had been removed to internment camps.
