Discover Woodbridge

Woodbridge began as a village of plantations and later of farms and industry. It dates to at least 1731, when Prince William County was formed from Stafford County, and the first county courthouse was built there, halfway between Dumfries and Alexandria, then the county's largest towns. When Fairfax County was created, Woodbridge was no longer at the county's center, and the courthouse moved west to Brentsville and eventually to Manassas.

More about Woodbridge

Two large plantations dominated early Woodbridge: Thomas Mason's Woodbridge Plantation north of Marumsco Creek, later called Deep Hole Plantation, and Belle Aire to the south, owned first by the Linton and then the Grayson family, which served as a field hospital during the Civil War. The bridge that gave the community its name washed away in a storm in 1807, and trade shifted to Occoquan, the next river crossing. The bridge was not replaced until the 20th century, when an iron truss bridge was built, and that bridge failed during Hurricane Agnes in 1972. After World War II the old plantations were redeveloped as suburban subdivisions. On the Deep Hole Plantation the Army built the East Coast Radio Transmitting Station, which operated from 1950 to 1994, and in 1995 the land became the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Most of the Grayson farm became subdivisions named for Marumsco Creek, and the Woodbridge postal area grew to include Dale City and Lake Ridge. Sources Wikipedia: Woodbridge, Virginia
