When Europeans arrived, the Manahoac, a Siouan-speaking people, lived in the area, and colonists recorded their village there as Mahaskahod. The land where the city stands was part of a tract patented in 1671, and in 1676 the General Assembly built a fort on the Rappahannock just downriver. In 1714 Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood sponsored the German settlement of Germanna upstream, and in 1716 he led an expedition over the Blue Ridge. Spotsylvania County, named for him, was formed in 1720, and in 1728 Fredericksburg was made a port for the county. It was named for Frederick, Prince of Wales, and its streets for his relatives. It was the county seat from 1732 to 1780, when the court moved to Spotsylvania Courthouse, and Fredericksburg then incorporated with its own court, council and mayor. It became an independent city in 1879.
In 1738 George Washington's family moved to Ferry Farm, across the Rappahannock in Stafford County. His mother, Mary, later moved into town, and his sister Betty lived at Kenmore, whose owner, Fielding Lewis, Washington's brother-in-law, ran an arms factory for the Continental Army. Local men signed the Leedstown Resolves against the Stamp Act in the 1760s. Generals Hugh Mercer and George Weedon, the naval hero John Paul Jones and the future president James Monroe lived there, and Thomas Jefferson wrote the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom in Fredericksburg. In the 19th century mills on the Rappahannock ground flour and wove cotton, and by 1837 the railroad that became the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac linked the town to Richmond. The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought there in December 1862. Sources Wikipedia: Fredericksburg, Virginia
