White settlement of the area began when William S. Peters of Kentucky obtained a land grant from the Texas Congress for the Peters Colony, and the first settlers arrived in the southeast of the county in 1843. The legislature formed Denton County in 1846. The county and the town are named for John B. Denton, a preacher and lawyer killed in 1841 in a skirmish with the Kichai in what is now Tarrant County. Pickneyville and Alton served as the county seat before Denton was chosen in 1857, when a commission laid out the town and named its first streets.

More about Denton

On July 8, 1860, about half of the downtown square burned, one of fires in ten Texas towns that day, including Dallas and Pilot Point, during what were called the "Texas Troubles." The fires were quickly blamed on a slave insurrection, and by the end of July vigilantes had taken over, hanging many Black people and white abolitionists although no hard evidence was ever produced against any of them. In February 1861 Texas voters chose to join the Confederacy. After the Civil War, Freedmen settlements grew up across the South. One of them, Quakertown, thrived just south of what is now Texas Woman's University until around 1920, when the city government forcibly removed its residents to make way for a park. Quakertown's Black children attended the separate Frederick Douglass School. Sources Wikipedia: Denton, Texas
