Discover Minor Hill

Minor Hill, in southern Giles County, is named for Joseph Minor, an early settler; a later owner of the Minor tract gave land for a school, church and cemetery in the mid-19th century. A post office was established in 1870, and the town was incorporated that year.

More about Minor Hill

In November 1863 Confederate scout Sam Davis stopped at Minor Hill while carrying dispatches to General Braxton Bragg; sources give the date as November 19 or 20. By local tradition he was asleep under a plum tree when two members of the 7th Kansas Cavalry, disguised as Confederates, arrested him and found maps and descriptions of Union fortifications in his boot and saddle. Taken to Pulaski, he was hanged as a spy on November 27. Mrs. Sarah Braley, who lived near the site, kept a map showing the old plum stump, and Minor Hill residents led by William C. Vaughan raised $250, matched by the state, for a monument where he was captured. In 1900 James David Vaughan, later a noted gospel songbook publisher, published his first songbook in Minor Hill, and he and three brothers toured the region as a gospel quartet.
