Discover Pulaski

Pulaski, the seat of Giles County, was founded in 1809. After Union forces took control of Tennessee in 1862, thousands of African Americans left plantations and farms for the Union lines, many even before the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Army set up a contraband camp at Pulaski to house, feed and employ freed people and their families, with classes for them. The area saw several skirmishes during the Franklin-Nashville Campaign of 1864.

More about Pulaski

In November 1863 Confederate scout Sam Davis, captured at Minor Hill while carrying dispatches to General Braxton Bragg, was brought to Union headquarters at Pulaski, tried as a spy and sentenced to death within a week. Offered a pardon by General Grenville M. Dodge if he would name his source, he refused, saying he would rather give a thousand lives than betray a friend, and he was hanged on November 27, 1863. On December 24, 1865, six Confederate veterans, John C. Lester, John B. Kennedy, James R. Crowe, Frank O. McCord, Richard R. Reed and J. Calvin Jones, founded the Ku Klux Klan in Pulaski, a secret society devoted to suppressing freedmen and their white allies; chapters soon spread across the South, and a riot against Black residents broke out in Pulaski in the winter of 1868. Martin Methodist College, founded in Pulaski in 1870, became the University of Tennessee Southern in 2021.
