Estill Springs, in Franklin County, takes its name from mineral springs long known to the Cherokee. The town dates from about 1840, when the Frank Estill family, which owned much of the land, gave a right-of-way for the railroad. The combination of mineral water, then popular as a health remedy, and rail access made it a small spa town. Oscar Meyer was its first mayor.
During the Civil War the town was generally known as Allisonia, for another settler family. It was the site of a Confederate training camp, Camp Harris, named for Tennessee's Confederate governor, Isham G. Harris, a native of the county, and Southern forces retreated through it during the Tullahoma Campaign of 1863. The foundation of a Civil War-era bridge can still be seen beside the Beth Page bridge over the Elk River. Sources Wikipedia: Estill Springs, Tennessee
