Discover Sewanee

Sewanee, on the Cumberland Plateau in Franklin County, is best known as the home of the University of the South. Beginning in the 1830s, Bishop James Otey of Tennessee led an effort to found an Episcopal seminary in the Deep South, and the mountain site was chosen for its rail access: a spur called the "Mountain Goat" ran up the mountain from 1858 until 1985. On July 4, 1857, Bishop Leonidas Polk led delegates from ten Southern dioceses up Monteagle Mountain to found the college, meant, Otey said, to help the South "resist and repel a fanatical domination."

More about Sewanee

Most of the land was given by the Sewanee Mining Company, whose early profits came largely from leased convict labor, mostly African American, and the largest single donor was John Armfield, co-founder of Franklin and Armfield, the nation's largest slave-trading firm. The six-ton marble cornerstone, laid on October 10, 1860, was blown up by Union soldiers in 1863; a large fragment is now set in the wall of All Saints' Chapel. The war halted construction, and Polk was killed in the Atlanta campaign. Former Confederate generals Edmund Kirby Smith, Josiah Gorgas and Francis A. Shoup were prominent in the university's revival after the war. Sources Wikipedia: Sewanee, Tennessee Wikipedia: Sewanee: The University of the South
