Sites around Chattanooga show continuous human occupation from about 10,000 BCE through the Archaic, Woodland, Mississippian and Cherokee periods. The Chickamauga Mound, from about 750 CE, is the oldest surviving visible work in the city, and the Citico town and mound was the area's most important Mississippian landmark until 1915. The name is often traced to the Muskogean cvto, "rock," with a suffix meaning dwelling place, or to a Creek phrase meaning "rock rising to a point," possibly Lookout Mountain. Cherokee settlement began in 1776, when Dragging Canoe broke away to resist white settlement, and in 1816 John Ross, later Principal Chief, founded Ross's Landing on what is now Broad Street.
In 1838 the Army used Ross's Landing as one of three main emigration depots where Cherokee were held before being forced west on the Trail of Tears. In 1839 Ross's Landing was incorporated as Chattanooga. River trade fed its growth, the railroad arrived in 1850, and the city became known as the place "where cotton meets corn." In the Civil War Chattanooga's railroads linked half the Confederacy's arsenals. Union troops occupied the city on September 9, 1863, and after their defeat at Chickamauga they fell back into it under siege. On November 23, 1863, Ulysses S. Grant's reinforced army advanced to Orchard Knob. The Battle of Lookout Mountain drove the Confederates off the mountain the next day, and on November 25 Grant's army routed them at Missionary Ridge, one of the turning points of the war.
