Discover Kenner

Kenner was founded in 1855 by Minor Kenner on land made up of three plantations, Oakland, Belle Grove and Pasture, that the Kenner family had bought. At the time, all the land north of what is now Airline Highway was swamp. On May 10, 1870, "Gypsy" Jem Mace defeated Tom Allen in Kenner for the heavyweight championship of the bare-knuckle era, and a monument marks the spot near the river end of Williams Boulevard. From 1915 to 1931 a streetcar line ran between Rampart and Canal streets in New Orleans and Williams Boulevard and Jefferson Highway in Kenner.

More about Kenner

Kenner's growth began in the late 1950s, when developers subdivided, drained and filled the swampland in the northern half of the city, and the building of Interstate 10 and improvements to Veterans Memorial Highway in the 1960s made it a fast-growing suburb of New Orleans. In 1982 Pan Am Flight 759 was forced down by a microburst into a residential area of Kenner, killing all 145 people aboard and eight on the ground and destroying six houses. The city stretches from Lake Pontchartrain to the Mississippi River on the west side of Greater New Orleans. Sources Wikipedia: Kenner, Louisiana
