In August 1853 Daniel Harmon Brush, John Asgill Conner and Dr. William Richart bought a 360-acre tract between two proposed railroad stations, Makanda and De Soto, and two county seats, Murphysboro and Marion, and Brush named the town Carbondale for the area's large coal deposits. The first train arrived on Independence Day 1854, coming north from Cairo on the main line, and by the Civil War Carbondale was a regional center of transportation and business amid farmland in the part of Illinois known as Little Egypt.

More about Carbondale

On April 29, 1866, one of the first formal Memorial Day observances after the Civil War was held at the city's Woodlawn Cemetery, with the local resident General John A. Logan giving the main address. As a founder of the Grand Army of the Republic, Logan issued General Order No. 11 on March 3, 1868, calling for a national day of remembrance on May 30, which he called Decoration Day, and the order became the basis of Memorial Day. Carbondale has had a college since 1856, when Presbyterians founded Carbondale College, and it won the new state teachers' school for the region, Southern Illinois Normal University, which opened in 1874, became Southern Illinois University in 1947 and is now the flagship of the SIU system. With the growth of the university, Carbondale was known in the early 20th century as the Athens of Egypt. Sources Wikipedia: Carbondale, Illinois
