Discover Mchenry

Settlers arrived in the McHenry area in the 1830s, and some of their family names, McCullom, McLean, Boone and Wheeler, are still known there. George Gage came in 1835 and bought land west of the Fox River that became known as Gagetown, later West McHenry, and in 1854 he played a key role in bringing the railroad to town. A dam on Boone Creek in 1851 created Mill Pond, between today's railroad tracks and Route 31, which was drained in 1929 when the dam was removed. The historic Count's House was finished in 1860.

More about Mchenry

Jay Van Slyke published the first issue of the town newspaper, the McHenry Plaindealer, on August 4, 1875, and it became part of the Northwest Herald in 1985. The first bridge over the Fox River, a single-lane iron truss at Pearl Street, was built in 1880 and 1881; when it was replaced with a concrete bridge, a section was moved to Crystal Lake in 1976 for use as a pedestrian bridge. On March 30, 1908, a train bound for Ringwood crashed near the McHenry depot, killing one person. The city lies on the Fox River about 46 miles northwest of Chicago.
