Discover Crystal Lake

Crystal Lake grew from two 19th-century communities, Crystal Lake and Nunda. In 1835 Ziba S. Beardsley came to the lake and remarked that its "waters were as clear as crystal," giving it its name, before continuing on to Naperville. The first white settlers, Beman and Polly Crandall and six of their ten children, arrived from New York in a covered wagon in February 1836 and built a cabin near today's Virginia and Van Buren streets, and Najah Beardsley's family came next; his grandson William, born on May 7, 1837, was the first white child born on the Crystal Lake prairie. The settlement, first called Crystal Ville, became Crystal Lake before 1840.

More about Crystal Lake

What is now downtown grew separately after the railroad came through in the 1850s, as the village of Dearborn, whose first station, prefabricated and shipped from Chicago on a flatcar, was built in 1856, while Crystal Lake's business district stood on Virginia Street about a mile southwest. On October 7, 1868, Dearborn was renamed Nunda, after the New York town many settlers came from, and the surveyor John Brink platted it that year on land owned largely by Daniel Ellsworth and Simon S. Gates. Both Crystal Lake and Nunda were incorporated in 1874, Nunda became North Crystal Lake in 1908, and after much disagreement North Crystal Lake was annexed to Crystal Lake in 1914 under a single government.
