Wildwood, in the northeastern corner of Dade County near the Tennessee line, sits in the valley between Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain that runs through the county.
Near Wildwood, just east of the railroad and 200 yards north of Wauhatchie Spring, stood the home of Wauhatchie, a Cherokee chief. In the War of 1812 he served in a company of Cherokees under Captain John Brown, Colonel Gideon Morgan and General Andrew Jackson, fighting the Creeks from January 17 to April 11, 1814; old records say he was severely wounded on March 27 and lost his horse. Wauhatchie signed the Hiwassee Purchase of July 8, 1817, appears in the 1835 census of the Cherokee Nation, and followed the Trail of Tears west when the Cherokee were removed from Georgia.
