Menlo, in Chattooga County, was platted in 1883 by its founder, Captain Andrew Lawrence, who named it for Menlo Park, New Jersey, in honor of Thomas Edison. A post office has operated there since 1886, and the Georgia General Assembly incorporated Menlo as a town in 1903.

More about Menlo

Menlo is the burial place of Hugh Montgomery, born in South Carolina on January 8, 1769. In 1786 he was hired to survey the line between Franklin County and the Cherokee Nation, and he later served Jackson County in the Georgia House from 1807 to 1811 and in the state Senate from 1812 to 1818 and 1823 to 1835. A religious man, he is said to have financed the first missionary to the Cherokee. President James Monroe appointed Montgomery U.S. agent to the Cherokee on March 3, 1825, and he served until the Cherokee were driven from Georgia, receiving 3,000 acres in Chattooga County for his services. In 1882 a new road was opened from Valley Head, Alabama, across Lookout Mountain to Menlo.
