Discover Acworth

Like the rest of Cobb County, the Acworth area was carved out of the Cherokee Nation in 1831 after the Cherokee were expelled. The Western and Atlantic Railroad was completed through the town in 1840 and set up a watering station for its locomotives there. In 1843 the railroad engineer Joseph L. Gregg named the town for his hometown of Acworth, New Hampshire, itself named for Sir Jacob Acworth, a Royal Navy surveyor. Telegraph lines arrived in 1851, a private school for white students opened in 1852, and Acworth was incorporated on December 1, 1860. Black students were taught separately, and until well into the 20th century the nearest Black high school was in Atlanta.

More about Acworth

Local volunteers in the Civil War joined Company A, the Acworth Infantry, of the 18th Georgia and Company C, the Invincibles, of the 41st Georgia. Union forces captured the town on June 6, 1864, calling it Little Shanty to distinguish it from Big Shanty, now Kennesaw, and held it under martial law for six months. On November 13, 1864, Sherman's army burned the town, sparing 12 homes and one church and leaving its people destitute. Acworth had nearly recovered by the 1880s. Cotton farming in the area peaked from the 1890s through the 1920s and ended with the low prices of the Depression. During segregation the railroad tracks divided the town, with Black residents living northeast of them and white residents to the southwest. Sources Wikipedia: Acworth, Georgia
