Pioneers began settling the Smyrna area in 1832, and by the late 1830s a religious encampment called the Smyrna Camp Ground had become a popular destination known throughout Georgia. Its name came from the biblical city of Smyrna, now Izmir in Turkey, home of the Christian martyr Polycarp. The area grew after the Western and Atlantic Railroad was completed in 1842, and until 1872 it was known by several names, among them Varner's Station, Ruff's Siding, Neal Dow and Ruff's Station. It was incorporated as Smyrna in 1872.
Two Civil War battles were fought in the area on July 4, 1864, the Battle of Smyrna Camp Ground and the Battle of Ruff's Mill, and Sherman's troops burned the area's businesses, homes and its 1849 covered bridge, which has since been rebuilt and is still in use. After World War II the nearby Bell Bomber plant, which had built B-29s during the war, was reopened by Lockheed in 1951 and spurred rapid growth, and the city grew from 2,005 people in 1950 to almost 20,000 by 1970. Smyrna lies just northwest of Atlanta near the junction of Interstates 285 and 75. Sources Wikipedia: Smyrna, Georgia
