Discover Holt
Holt is one of the oldest settlements in Okaloosa County. According to The Heritage of Okaloosa County, the area was already settled before a land survey in 1828 and 1829. The community is named for David Holt, whose family owned the building where the stagecoach stopped on the route between Milton and Florala, Alabama.

The Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad came through around 1882 and 1883, with Holt one of the first stops east of Milton; early timetables listed it as "Holts." Local entrepreneurs started a lighterwood business, gathering resin-rich pine knots to fuel the locomotives. A post office opened in 1883 and still operates, and the first school opened in 1888. Jobs in sawmills and turpentine stills drew newcomers, and by 1900 Holt had 545 residents. The Baker Block Museum credits timber, more than the railroad, with the community's settlement. Holt, listed among Florida's former municipalities, is today an unincorporated community in western Okaloosa County, still served by the post office that opened at the old railroad stop in 1883.
