Gainesville, the seat of Alachua County, has archaeological evidence of Paleo-Indians from about 12,000 years ago. A Deptford culture campsite was used between about 500 B.C. and A.D. 100; some of its people moved south to Paynes Prairie and Orange Lake and developed into the Cades Pond culture, while those who stayed were displaced in the seventh century by migrants from southern Georgia, who became the Alachua culture and built a burial mound atop the old campsite. The Potano people, their descendants, lived here when Europeans arrived.
More about Gainesville
European contact sharply reduced the Native population through disease, enslavement and war, and in the 18th century Spanish colonists ranched cattle around Paynes Prairie. Spain ceded Florida to the United States in 1821.
Gainesville was established in 1854 and named for General Edmund P. Gaines. It was incorporated as a town in 1869 and chartered as a city in 1907. In 1906 the University of the State of Florida moved from Lake City to Gainesville, and in 1909 its name was shortened to the University of Florida, which now dominates the city. Paynes Prairie, a 21,000-acre wilderness, lies at its southern edge.
