Discover La Crosse

LaCrosse, about 15 miles north of Gainesville, was settled in the 1840s, beginning with John Cellon, a young French immigrant; other early settlers included Thomas Green, Abraham Mott, Richard H. Parker, William Scott and Thomas Standley. The town was built on land granted to Parker by the federal government in 1856, and by 1860 it was an agricultural village in a cotton-growing area. The community was known as Rome until the post office opened on April 22, 1881, in the store of cotton buyer John Eli Futch, who served as postmaster.

More about La Crosse

Parker's son Henry Clay Parker opened his first business in 1878, which grew into the area's largest general store. The town was incorporated on December 17, 1897, named, by one account, for settlers from La Crosse, Wisconsin; the county marker says either Mrs. Futch or Henry Clay Parker chose the name. By 1900 LaCrosse had two cotton gins, gristmills, several stores and a hotel. When the boll weevil wrecked the cotton crop in the early 1900s, farmers turned to potatoes, and LaCrosse became known as the "Potato District," a major shipping point with a cooper making barrels for rail shipment. It remains a farming area for corn, vegetables, tobacco and livestock. Sources The Historical Marker Database: LaCrosse (Alachua County Historical Commission) Wikipedia: LaCrosse, Florida
