Discover Longmont

Indigenous peoples first lived in the region, and the Clovis culture is the earliest documented population there. Longmont was founded in 1871 by people from Chicago as the Chicago-Colorado Colony, led by its president, Robert Collyer. The colonists sold memberships and used the money to buy the land, and as the first planned community in Boulder County the town was laid out in a grid within a square mile. The post office opened on April 14, 1873. Longmont prospered as a farming town after the Colorado Central Railroad arrived from Boulder in 1877, and it was incorporated on November 15, 1885.

More about Longmont

In 1925 the Ku Klux Klan won control of the city council. It began building Chimney Rock Dam above Lyons, a costly project, and marched on Main Street in robes, but its members were voted out in 1927 and its influence faded. The dam was abandoned as unworkable, and its foundations can still be seen in the St. Vrain River. In 1955 United Airlines Flight 629 exploded over Weld County 8 miles east of Longmont, killing 44 people. In the 1960s the federal government built the Denver Air Route Traffic Control Center in Longmont, and IBM opened a manufacturing and development campus nearby. Longmont Foods, which built a large plant in 1950, sold turkey products, including turkey hot dogs, across the country. Sources Wikipedia: Longmont, Colorado
