The Vista area was first home to the Luiseno, who had a village called Tovalum. Spain controlled the land from the late 18th century and founded missions in the region, and after Mexican independence the government granted three ranchos in the Vista area, Rancho Guajome, Rancho Buena Vista and Agua Hedionda y los Manos. The ranchos faded in the 1850s with political change and scarce water, and after statehood in 1850 more settlers arrived and created smaller farms.
More about Vista
In 1870 Bernard Delpy came from France and built what became known as Delpy Corners, at today's East Vista Way and Foothill Drive. His nephew Jules Jacques Delpy joined him in 1879, and they planted several hundred acres of grapes and in 1886 built a winery that operated until Prohibition. The settler John A. Frazier applied to open the first post office, and after finding the names Frazier and Buena Vista already taken, he chose Vista, and the post office opened in 1882.
Limited by its lack of water, Vista had fewer than 1,000 people in the early 1910s. In 1923 the Vista Irrigation District secured funding to bring water from Lake Henshaw, and agriculture flourished, with citrus, tomatoes, celery and above all avocados. By the late 1940s Vista, with several avocado packing houses, was promoted as the avocado capital of the world. After World War II farming declined as people and housing arrived, and the City of Vista was incorporated on January 28, 1963.
