Discover La Mesa

Before European colonization the La Mesa area was home to the Kumeyaay, a Yuman-speaking people who farmed, hunted and gathered and were organized as a federation of self-governing bands. Beginning in 1769 the Kumeyaay of the San Diego region were enslaved by Spanish colonists or later forcibly moved to reservations. La Mesa, Spanish for "the table" or "the plateau," describes the land's geography, and the area was part of the lands of Mission San Diego de Alcala, used by its missionaries.

More about La Mesa

Spanish, Mexican and American settlers all valued La Mesa for its natural springs. In 1868 the stockman Robert Allison bought 4,000 acres from the heirs of Santiago Arguello, commandant of the Presidio of San Diego, and the Allison springs were renamed La Mesa Springs. Their importance is still reflected in the name of Spring Street, which runs through downtown, and in the preserved spring house in Collier Park. La Mesa was founded in 1869, and the City of La Mesa was incorporated on February 16, 1912. Its official flower is the bougainvillea. Sources Wikipedia: La Mesa, California
