Discover Walnut Creek

Three bands of Bay Miwok lived around the creek for which Walnut Creek is named: the Saclan in the hills east of today's Oakland, Lafayette, Moraga and Walnut Creek, the Volvon near Mount Diablo and the Tactan along San Ramon Creek. The city grew within four large Mexican land grants. One, the 18,000-acre Rancho Arroyo de las Nueces y Bolbones, belonged to Juana Sanchez de Pacheco and was named for the Arroyo de las Nueces, "walnut creek," after the native walnut, and for the Volvon, called Bolbones in Spanish. Her grandson Ygnacio Sibrian built the valley's first roofed house around 1850.

More about Walnut Creek

After the American annexation of California, a small settlement called The Corners grew where roads from Pacheco and Lafayette met, at today's Mount Diablo Boulevard and North Main Street. The first town settler, William Slusher, built a house on the creek, which Americans called Nuts Creek in 1849. In 1855 Milo Hough of Lafayette built the Walnut Creek House hotel at The Corners, followed by a blacksmith shop and a store, and Hiram Penniman laid out a townsite and realigned Main Street. A post office named Walnut Creek opened in December 1862, and the pioneer Homer Shuey platted the downtown streets in 1871 and 1872 on part of his family's cattle ranch, a pattern kept to this day. The Southern Pacific arrived in 1891, and the town was incorporated on October 21, 1914. Sources Wikipedia: Walnut Creek, California
