Discover Richmond

The Ohlone were the first people of the Richmond area, arriving an estimated 5,000 years ago. They spoke Chochenyo and lived by hunting, gathering and harvesting. The land later became part of Rancho San Pablo, granted to Don Francisco Maria Castro, from which nearby San Pablo takes its name. The Point Richmond area was first called The Potrero and appeared on early charts of the bay as Point Stevens. Point Richmond was an island until industrial development and fill joined it to the mainland by the early 1900s.

More about Richmond

On July 4, 1900, the Santa Fe Railroad opened its western terminus at Point Richmond, with ferries from Ferry Point to San Francisco. It built a large rail yard and a tunnel through the Potrero San Pablo ridge to a ferry landing where freight cars were shipped across the bay. Where the track crosses Point Richmond's main street stand two of the last wigwag crossing signals in the country, and the only surviving "upside-down" ones. When the state ordered the crossing upgraded in 2005, a compromise added modern gates and lights while keeping the old signals in place. In World War II Henry J. Kaiser's Richmond shipyards built 747 Victory and Liberty ships, more than any other site in the country, and set many records, served by a special Shipyard Railway that carried workers. The city's population rose from 23,000 in 1940 to 114,899 in 1942 and peaked at about 120,000 by 1945. Sources Wikipedia: Richmond, California
