Discover Tracy

Until the 1760s the area that became Tracy was home to bands of Yokuts, who lived by hunting, gathering and fishing in the local rivers and creeks. After contact with Spanish colonists, the Yokuts suffered from new diseases and from Spanish efforts to press them into labor at Mission San Jose, and later Mexican and American arrivals pushed them out. About 2,600 people still identify as Yokuts, and another Native group, the Mono, are also found near Tracy.

More about Tracy

Tracy is a railroad town. From 1868 to September 1878 the Central Pacific Railroad, built mainly by Chinese laborers, laid lines from Sacramento through Stockton to the San Francisco Bay Area, and small communities grew up at the designated stations along them. The one at the junction of a new branch was named for the railroad director J. J. Tracy. Tracy was incorporated in 1911 and grew and prospered as the center of a farming region, even as large railroad operations declined in the 1950s in the face of competition from trucks and automobiles. In December 1969 the Altamont Free Concert drew an estimated 300,000 people to Altamont Raceway Park near Tracy, an event remembered for the violence that marred it. The city is now considered part of the greater Bay Area. Sources Wikipedia: Tracy, California
