In 1859 a group of local families started a school near today's Cherokee Lane and Turner Road. In 1869, as the Central Pacific Railroad laid out a new route, the settlers Ezekiel Lawrence, Reuben Wardrobe, A. C. Ayers and John Magley offered it a 160-acre townsite to build a station there. The railroad received a 12-acre reserve in the middle of town, surveyors laid out streets between Washington and Church and Locust and Walnut, and settlers came from nearby Woodbridge, Liberty City and Galt, among them the town founders John M. Burt and Dan Crist.
The town was first called Mokelumne, or Mokelumne Station, after the nearby river, but confusion with other towns led to a name change endorsed by the state assembly. Accounts of the name differ. One story credits a locally stabled trotting horse that set a four-mile record, though it was most famous in 1869, years before the change in 1873. Another points to Lodi in northern Italy, site of Napoleon's first victory in 1796, but more likely some early families came from a place once called Lodi, Illinois, and brought the name with them. Lodi's voters approved incorporation in 1906 by a margin of two to one. The Lodi Opera House was built in 1905, a Carnegie library in 1909 and a hospital in 1915, the fire department was founded in 1911, and in 1919 the city bought the Bay City Gas and Water Works.
