Discover San Leandro

The Spanish called the area's Native people Costenos, "coast people," which English speakers rendered as Costanoans. The first Europeans to visit San Leandro were Captain Pedro Fages and Father Juan Crespi, on March 20, 1772. The city lies on two Mexican land grants along El Camino Viejo, today's 14th Street: Rancho San Antonio, about 44,000 acres, granted to the Spanish soldier Luis Maria Peralta in 1820, and Rancho San Leandro, about 9,000 acres, granted to Jose Joaquin Estudillo in 1842. The name honors Leander of Seville, a sixth-century Spanish bishop.

More about San Leandro

Beginning in 1855, Estudillo's sons-in-law John B. Ward and William Heath Davis laid out the townsite between San Leandro Creek, Watkins Street, Castro Street and a line a block west of Alvarado Street. In 1856 San Leandro became the seat of Alameda County, but the 1868 earthquake on the Hayward Fault destroyed the courthouse, and in 1872 the seat moved to Brooklyn, now part of Oakland. During the Civil War San Leandro and Brooklyn fielded a militia company, the Brooklyn Guard. From the 1880s Portuguese laborers from Hawaii and the Azores settled in San Leandro and started farms and businesses, and by the 1910 census they made up nearly two-thirds of the population. After World War II San Leandro, like many California suburbs, had restrictive covenants limiting to whom property owners could sell. Sources Wikipedia: San Leandro, California
