Discover Hayward

People have lived in the East Bay since at least 4000 BC, and the Ohlone were the most recent inhabitants of the Hayward area before Europeans arrived. In 1841 the land became part of Rancho San Lorenzo, granted to Guillermo Castro, whose house stood on the old El Camino Viejo, now Mission Boulevard. The town was known for a time as Haywards. Historians disagree about its name, but most believe it was named for William Dutton Hayward, who opened a hotel there in 1852 and later served as county road commissioner and supervisor. A post office opened in 1860.

More about Hayward

The Hayward earthquake of 1868, the last major quake on the Hayward Fault, which runs directly under Castro's house site, destroyed most of the town's buildings. City Hall was built on that site in 1930 and served until 1969. Hayward was incorporated in 1876 and grew on farming and tourism, with tomatoes, potatoes, peaches, cherries and apricots, chicken and pigeon raising, and the Hunt Brothers Cannery, opened in 1895. Salt evaporation ponds along the bay shore, run by companies such as Leslie Salt, were among the most productive in the world. The San Mateo-Hayward Bridge opened in 1929. In the 1930s the Harry Rowell Rodeo Ranch drew cowboys from across the continent and Western film actors such as Slim Pickens. Hayward had a large Japanese American community before World War II, and its members were sent to internment camps during the war. War factories brought a boom, and many workers stayed after it ended. Sources Wikipedia: Hayward, California
