Discover Fremont

The recorded history of the Fremont area began on June 6, 1797, when Father Fermin de Lasuen founded Mission San Jose at the site of the Ohlone village of Oroysom. The Ohlone lived along the rivers and estuaries, hunting and gathering. At the mission they were made to farm, ranch and make adobe bricks and were pressed to give up their beliefs, and crowding, food shortages and disease killed many. Jedediah Smith, the first English-speaking visitor, came in 1827. The mission reached 1,887 residents in 1831 and declined after Mexico secularized the missions in 1834. Jose de Jesus Vallejo, brother of Mariano Vallejo, held Rancho Arroyo de la Alameda and built a flour mill at the mouth of Niles Canyon.

More about Fremont

In 1846 John C. Fremont, for whom the city is named, led a military expedition through Mission Pass on his way to take California from Mexico. The area grew quickly during the Gold Rush. A town called Mission San Jose grew up around the old mission and had its own post office from 1850, and grapes, nursery plants and olives were the main crops. The magnitude 6.8 Hayward earthquake of 1868 collapsed buildings across the area and ruined the mission. The Palmdale Winery was a major producer until the 1906 earthquake destroyed it. Fremont was incorporated on January 23, 1956, when the towns of Mission San Jose, Centerville, Niles, Irvington and Warm Springs joined into one city. It later became a center of the tech industry, and a Tesla plant with about 25,000 workers in 2024 is its largest employer. Sources Wikipedia: Fremont, California
