Beatrice, in northern Monroe County, was created by a railroad. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad established the town in 1899 and 1900 while building a line between Pine Apple in Wilcox County and Repton in Conecuh County, and it named the town for the granddaughter of the line's general superintendent of construction.
Local landowner Barbara Robbins gave the railroad its right-of-way, and the Robbins family later sold much of its remaining land for the town center. A land speculator named Quigley bought most of that land and laid out the town, and the first school, Quigley Institute, was named for him. The Robbins family home became a popular hotel that operated for many years. Beatrice was incorporated in 1901. It prospered as a shipping center, mainly for cotton grown on the surrounding farms, and its first bank opened in 1907. Sources Encyclopedia of Alabama: Beatrice Wikipedia: Beatrice, Alabama
