Vredenburgh was built as a sawmill village. In 1910 Peter Vredenburgh Jr., an Illinois native who had come to Alabama at his father's urging to start a business of his own, founded the town around the Vredenburgh Saw Mill and Plant, and the Louisville and Nashville Railroad built a line to it. The town was incorporated in 1912, and it soon had schools for Black and white children, a baseball stadium and a church.
When the original mill burned in 1920, a second mill was already under construction, and a few years later two mills were running. The Vredenburgh family sold the property to International Paper in 1954. The second mill burned in 1962, and the sawmill closed for good in the early 1980s. In 1985 the Edmundite Southern Missions opened a rural health clinic in Vredenburgh, followed a few years later by an early learning center. The forests around the town are still managed for timber and have been designated a TREASURE Forest. Sources Encyclopedia of Alabama: Vredenburgh Wikipedia: Vredenburgh, Alabama
