West Blocton began in 1883 and 1884 as a business and residential community next to Blocton, the company town of the Cahaba Coal Mining Company founded by Truman H. Aldrich. The first coal was shipped from Blocton in February 1884, and in 1887 work began on beehive coke ovens; by 1892, when the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company took over, 467 ovens were producing coke for furnaces at Anniston, Birmingham, Bessemer and elsewhere. Around 1900 Blocton was the largest company town in the Cahaba coal field, with nine churches, a hospital and more than 375 miners' houses. It declined after U.S. Steel stopped operations in 1928.
West Blocton, built on land once owned by Uriah Smith, was incorporated in 1901 with Eugene D. Reynolds as its first mayor. It became the commercial center for the company towns and mining camps of the southern Cahaba field, among them Belle Ellen, founded in 1895 and named for the daughter and wife of industrialist Henry F. DeBardeleben. Bibb County's first bank, the Blocton Savings Bank, opened in 1892, and by 1910 the town had 55 businesses. Mining drew immigrants from across Europe, especially Italy; an Italian Catholic cemetery lies east of town, a neighborhood is known as Little Italy, and the League of Brothers Synagogue was built on Main Street in 1905. Frank T. Ferrire, son of Italian immigrants, was the town's longest-serving mayor, from 1965 to 1984. The old coke ovens are preserved in a park, and West Blocton is home to the Cahaba Lily Festival.
