Ashville, one of the two seats of St. Clair County, was first called St. Clairsville. The county was created in 1818 by the first session of the Alabama territorial legislature from Creek land ceded in the Treaty of Fort Jackson, and named for General Arthur St. Clair, Revolutionary War hero and governor of the Northwest Territory; its first settlers were Creek War veterans from Tennessee and Georgia. In 1817 John Ash and his family, traveling west by wagon on the old Montevallo Road, lost their three-year-old daughter, Betsy Ann, in a fall from the wagon in Beaver Valley, and, unwilling to leave her grave, settled there. Ash's house of 1818 is the oldest standing building in the county.
Ash became a territorial senator, county commissioner, judge and state senator. Philip Coleman sold 30 acres to five commissioners, including Ash, appointed by Governor Thomas Bibb to establish a county seat, and the town was named for him; sources date its designation and incorporation to 1821 or 1822. The log courthouse was replaced in 1844 by the present courthouse. On August 20, 1870, during Reconstruction, former Confederate sergeant E. Frank Harrison, a delegate to the county's first postwar Democratic convention, was shot and killed near the courthouse by H. J. Springfield, according to a Sons of Confederate Veterans marker. In 1890 investors began a railroad from Sheffield to Anniston through Ashville, but it reached only from Whitney before going bankrupt in the mid-1890s. Ashville was the sole county seat until Pell City became a second seat in the early 1900s.
