Albertville, the largest city in Marshall County, lies in country inhabited by the Cherokee until their removal in the 1830s, near Creek territory, and crossed by several major trails between the two nations; Hernando de Soto is believed to have passed through in 1540. Settlement began in the 1850s. On January 13, 1860, James C. Miller opened a post office and store in his log cabin and named it Albertville for his father-in-law, Thomas A. Albert, a settler from Georgia who led the community until his death in 1876; Miller was killed in the Civil War. (Wikipedia instead dates the post office to 1910.) The area saw several mid-sized clashes during the war, and the city was incorporated in 1891.
At about 4:10 p.m. on April 24, 1908, a tornado remembered as "The Great Cyclone" all but wiped out the town. It is believed to have killed 35 people across northeastern Alabama, 15 of them in Albertville. Relief arrived largely by train from Gadsden, bringing doctors, nurses and the Queen City Guards militia, whose commander, Colonel R. A. Mitchell, reported to Governor B. B. Comer that the destruction was unprecedented in the state's history. Albertville was later home to the Seventh District Agricultural School and calls itself the "Fire Hydrant Capital of the World."
