Discover Martinsville

Martinsville was founded by Joseph Martin, a Revolutionary War general, explorer and agent to Native Americans born in Albemarle County, who developed his plantation, Scuffle Hill, on the Smith River near the present southern city limits. Martin was a good friend of Patrick Henry, who lived briefly in Henry County, which is named for him. Scuffle Hill, the Beaver Creek Plantation, the Martinsville Fish Dam and several historic districts are on the National Register of Historic Places.

More about Martinsville

In the early 20th century many Black churches, schools and businesses grew up along Fayette Street. Dr. Dana Olden Baldwin, the area's first Black physician, arrived in 1910 and expanded the businesses there into "Baldwin's Block," the center of Black commerce and social life during segregation under Jim Crow laws. In 1941 DuPont built a large plant to make nylon filament, a vital war material, and nylon production jump-started the area's textile industry; during the Cold War the city was reportedly identified as a Soviet bombing target. Martinsville Speedway, a round-ended oval opened in 1947, has been used by NASCAR since its first season in 1949 and is the shortest oval in the series. The city was long known as the Sweatshirt Capital of the World. Sources Wikipedia: Martinsville, Virginia
