The Provo area was first called Timpanogas, a Ute word perhaps meaning "rock river," and was home to the Timpanogos, the largest and most settled community in what is now Utah. The Provo River gave them plenty of food, and the valley was a traditional meeting and worship place for the Ute and Shoshone. The Franciscan explorer Silvestre Velez de Escalante, guided by two Timpanogos Utes he called Silvestre and Joaquin, is considered the first European visitor, in 1776. The Spanish traded with the people they called Lagunas, "lake people," but did not settle.
Latter-day Saint pioneers reached the Salt Lake Valley to the north in 1847. Relations with the Utes and Shoshone were friendly at first but soured over land and cattle. After settlers reported thefts, Brigham Young ordered militia action that ended in the Battle Creek massacre at present Pleasant Grove. In 1849, 33 families from Salt Lake City built Fort Utah, and in 1850 Young sent an army to drive out the Timpanogos in what is called the Provo War. Rising tensions contributed to the later Walker War. Fort Utah was renamed Provo in 1850 for Etienne Provost, a French-Canadian trapper who had come to the region in 1825, and the first schoolhouse was built inside the fort that year. As more Latter-day Saints arrived, Provo grew quickly and was nicknamed the Garden City for its orchards and gardens. The railroad reached it in 1872, the year the Provo Woolen Mills, its first large factory, opened. Sources Wikipedia: Provo, Utah
