Discover Georgetown

Georgetown was named for George Washington Glasscock, who donated the land for the town. American and Swedish pioneers were drawn to the area by its plentiful timber, clear water and cheap, fertile land. It is the seat of Williamson County, created on March 13, 1848, from part of Milam County at the settlers' request. The county was to have been called San Gabriel County but was instead named for Robert McAlpin Williamson, a Texas statesman and judge known as "Three-legged Willie."

More about Georgetown

For most of the 19th and early 20th centuries Georgetown was a farming community. The Shawnee Trail, which carried cattle from Texas to the railheads of Kansas and Missouri, passed through it. The founding of Southwestern University in 1873 and the arrival of a railroad in 1878 added to the town's growth and importance. Cotton dominated from the 1880s to the 1920s, when Williamson County was at one time the leading cotton producer in Texas. Georgetown was served by two national railroads, the International-Great Northern, later part of the Missouri Pacific, and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas, which carried its cattle and cotton to market, along with the regional Georgetown and Granger Railroad.
