Discover Leander

Near Leander, archaeologists found the Leanderthal Lady, a skeleton 10,000 to 13,000 years old, at one of the earliest intact burial sites known in the United States. Tumlinson Fort, the first Anglo-American settlement in Williamson County, was built in early January 1836 at the headwaters of Brushy Creek, four miles south of present Leander, and a company of Texas Rangers held it to protect settlers from Comanche attacks until late February, when Santa Anna's invasion forced them to leave. The Comanche burned it soon after.

More about Leander

In October 1839 a party of settlers traveling west was attacked by Comanche just east of present Leander in what is called the Webster Massacre. Accounts differ on the details. A 1936 Texas Centennial marker at the mass grave, now inside the Davis Cemetery, says thirty were killed, but Dolly Webster, the only adult survivor to write an account, named a party of sixteen, of whom only she and her two children survived. Her account gives the date as October 13, though her travel itinerary suggests October 1. Leander was founded in 1882 on land sold by the Austin and Northwestern Railroad to prospective residents, and it was named for Leander "Catfish" Brown, one of the railroad officials responsible for completing the line. In August and September 2011 wildfires burned 330 acres in two central Leander neighborhoods and destroyed 26 homes. Sources Wikipedia: Leander, Texas
