The Bryan area was part of a Spanish land grant to Moses Austin, whose son Stephen F. Austin brought in settlers, among them his nephew William Joel Bryan, for whom the town is named. In 1866 the seat of Brazos County moved from Boonville to Bryan, and a post office opened. After delays caused by the Civil War, the Houston and Texas Central Railroad, which had stopped at Millican, reached Bryan in 1867, and the city was incorporated in 1871.
The Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas opened just south of town in 1876, in what became College Station, and the Bryan Independent School District was founded in 1877. Bryan added electric lights and a waterworks in 1889, built the fifth Brazos County courthouse in 1892, and by 1900 was served by the International-Great Northern Railroad. The Carnegie Library of Bryan, built with a $10,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie, opened in 1902, and a bell cast in 1905 and rung in 1918 to mark the end of World War I still stands in front of it. An interurban railroad to College Station was built in 1910 and abandoned by 1923. Temple Freda, the town's first synagogue, opened in 1913. In the 1930s the town of North Oakwood merged with Bryan, and Bryan and College Station are now twin cities. Sources Wikipedia: Bryan, Texas
