Crossville grew up where a branch of the Great Stage Road between Knoxville and Nashville crossed the Kentucky Stock Road, a drovers' path from Middle Tennessee to Kentucky that later reached Chattanooga, routes roughly followed today by U.S. 70 and U.S. 127. Around 1800 the settler Samuel Lambeth opened a store at the junction, near today's Main and Stanley streets, and the community became known as Lambeth's Crossroads. By the time a post office opened in the 1830s it was called Crossville. In the early 1850s James Scott, a merchant from Sparta, bought the store and renamed it Scott's Tavern.
When Cumberland County was formed in 1856, Crossville, nearest the county's center, became the seat, and Scott donated the first 40 acres for a courthouse and town square. During the Civil War the good roads opened the area to Union and Confederate troops and to bands of guerrillas, and the divided county, which sent roughly equal numbers of soldiers to both sides, suffered vicious guerrilla warfare and widespread pillaging. After World War I, U.S. 70 connected the town to markets. During the Depression the federal Subsistence Homestead Division built the Cumberland Homesteads south of town to give small farms to several hundred poor families, and Eleanor Roosevelt visited in 1934. Its recreation area became the core of Cumberland Mountain State Park. Crossville was a sundown town as late as the 1950s, with a sign at the city limits warning Black people not to stay after dark.
