From about 900 to 1000 CE, peoples of the South Appalachian Mississippian culture built villages along the area's river valleys, some with large earthen platform mounds. The region later became part of the territory of the Cherokee Nation. Hernando de Soto's expedition is believed to have camped along Candies Creek, in the western part of present Cleveland, on June 2, 1540. After the Revolution, white settlers pressed into Cherokee land, and in 1819 the Cherokee ceded the land north of the Hiwassee River in the Calhoun Treaty. In 1821 the Cherokee Agency, under Colonel Return J. Meigs, moved to the south bank of the Hiwassee at present Charleston, a few miles north of Cleveland.

More about Cleveland

In 1832 the Cherokee moved their seat of government to the Red Clay Council Grounds in southern Bradley County, now Red Clay State Park, where it remained until their removal. The Treaty of New Echota of December 29, 1835, signed although most Cherokee leaders had not approved it, began the removal. In the spring of 1838 the Army set up headquarters at Fort Cass in Charleston and held thousands of Cherokee in internment camps between Cleveland and Charleston, the largest at Rattlesnake Springs, before they were forced west on the Trail of Tears. The act of February 10, 1836, that created Bradley County, named for Colonel Edward Bradley, called for a county seat named Cleveland, for Colonel Benjamin Cleveland, a commander at the Battle of Kings Mountain. By a one-vote majority on May 2, 1836, the commissioners chose Taylor's Place, the home of Andrew Taylor, largely for its excellent water. Sources Wikipedia: Cleveland, Tennessee
