Caparra, the first European settlement in Puerto Rico, was founded in 1508 by Juan Ponce de Leon on land that is now part of Guaynabo, and Ponce de Leon lived there as the island's first Spanish governor. The settlement was abandoned in 1521 in favor of San Juan. The ruins of Caparra are a U.S. National Historic Landmark, and the Museum of the Conquest and Colonization of Puerto Rico stands on the grounds with artifacts from the site and elsewhere on the island.
The municipality was founded in 1769 by Pedro R. Davila after a struggle to separate from Bayamon. It was earlier known as Buinabo, a Taino name popularly said to mean "here is another place of fresh water." In the late 18th century the Irish officer Thomas O'Daly and his countryman Miguel Kirwan settled in the area and developed a farm and sugarcane plantation called Hacienda San Patricio. The plantation is gone, but its land is now Guaynabo's central business district and the site of the San Patricio Plaza shopping mall. Hurricane Maria struck on September 20, 2017, destroying about 2,800 homes in Guaynabo and setting off numerous landslides. Sources Wikipedia: Guaynabo, Puerto Rico
