The Kalapuya called the area Chim-i-ki-ti, thought to mean "meeting or resting place." Trappers and food gatherers for the fur companies at Astoria came as early as 1812. The first permanent American settlement was Jason Lee's Methodist mission of 1840, at Wheatland to the north. When the mission moved to the site it was called Chemeketa, though better known as the Mill, for its place on Mill Creek. In 1842 the missionaries founded the Oregon Institute, forerunner of Willamette University, and the town is counted as founded that year. The mission was dissolved in 1844, and the trustees laid out a town on the institute's land.

More about Salem

The origin of the name Salem is uncertain. William H. Willson, who filed the main town plans in 1850 and 1851, may have proposed an English form of the Hebrew shalom, "peace." The Rev. David Leslie, president of the trustees, may have suggested the last five letters of Jerusalem, or the town may be named for Salem, Massachusetts, where Leslie was educated. Some, like the newspaper editor Asahel Bush, wanted to change it back to Chemeketa. The city's Peace Plaza honors its names. Salem became the territorial capital in 1851, moved from Oregon City. The capital went briefly to Corvallis in 1855 and returned the same year. A new two-story state house burned in December 1855 after only two months in use. Salem was incorporated in 1857 and became the state capital with statehood in 1859, and a second capitol was finished on the same site in 1876. Sources Wikipedia: Salem, Oregon
