Before the Land Run of 1893, the site of Enid was part of O County in the Cherokee Outlet, held by the Cherokee after the Treaty of New Echota and the Trail of Tears. Earlier it had been a hunting ground of the Wichita, Osage and Kiowa. The Chisholm Trail, stagecoach lines, mail routes and railroads passed through stations at the place then known as Skeleton.

More about Enid

When the Cherokee Outlet opened in the Land Run of 1893, Enid was the site of a land office, now preserved in Humphrey Heritage Village at the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center. The government first endorsed a townsite at the Rock Island rail station, now North Enid, platted by the surveyor W. D. Twichell of Amarillo, but before the run the Department of the Interior moved the site 3 miles south to what was then called South Enid. This set off the Enid-Pond Creek Railroad War. During the run, because the Rock Island refused to stop, people leaped from the trains to stake claims at the government site, and by that afternoon an estimated 12,000 people crowded the 80-acre town plat. The original plat was 6 blocks wide by 11 long, with the town square at the northwest end, Government Springs Park in the middle of the south side and schools at the corners. A year later the population was about 4,410, and it reached 10,087 by statehood in 1907. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marquis James described the town's early years in his memoir Cherokee Strip: A Tale of an Oklahoma Boyhood. Sources Wikipedia: Enid, Oklahoma
